David Serero has a vocal mastery with an exquisite presence! THEATRE & PERFORMANCE, UK

Thanks to singer-director David Serero, theatergoers can now experience Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice with a Sephardic-theme and embellished with Jewish Ladino songs...this is a Merchant that breathes with Jewish authenticity and poetic fervor. What makes this Merchant sing, quite literally, is Serero, who plays Shylock and sings most of the Ladino songs that have been interlarded into the play. Serero, a baritone who has performed in prestigious venues across the world (including a performance in front of the Eiffel Tower for 18,000 people), is pitch-perfect here and deftly sets the tone for what follows. There are no English subtitles to translate the Ladino lyrics, but the pristine quality of Serero's voice and the sheer conviction of his delivery speak volumes.
Serero is the real stage-taker here. He inhabits Shylock with a genuine Jewish sensibility and delivers the famous speech "Hath not a Jew eyes?" with deep sincerity. Later on, in the trial scene, he unapologetically chews the scenery when he whets his knives in anticipation of getting his "pound of flesh" from the merchant Antonio. However, Serero's Shylock never topples over into caricature. Because he seamlessly straddles the acting and singing, the sacred Ladino song inform as well as soften this Shylock.
Serero deserves kudos for this fresh interpretation. CURTAIN UP, USA

REVIEW "David Serero on Broadway at the Snapple Theater"

From the moment David Serero appeared onstage at the Snapple Theater in NYC, carrying his mike and singing “New York, New York” the audience was his. People were cheering, swaying in their seats from side to side while David’s voice soared above it all. What charm! What a performance! He continued singing with “Toreador,” “If I Were a Rich Man” and an amazing version of “Ol’ Man River” which enabled him to show off his remarkable vocal range. “Singin’ In the Rain” brought out audience participation again — then Serero pulled over his bar stool, sat down and told a few jokes. Familiar or not, it didn’t matter. His warm style made his personality the dominant force — the comedy an interlude in his music. He resumed with “Love Me Tender” and “Bésame Mucho,” then Sinatra’s “Fly me to the Moon” and “I Did It My Way” with the audience again joining in. Halfway through “Autumn Leaves” he switched to French — then brought up to the stage a Russian girl so they could do a duet in that language.

This huge talent’s ability with languages (he sings 15!) stems from his Moroccan father, Iranian mother and being raised in Paris. His Jewish roots also gently enhance his program. After the show David greeted audience members, thanking them for coming. Again his warmth, energy and charm left everyone feeling they were important members of his instant fan club! David Serero will be performing again at the Snapple Theater on Dec. 17. Do be in the audience then. It’s a feel-good experience hard to match! Arriving on the Studio Theatre stage looking rather dapper, wearing a suit and a huge smile, the 32 year old French Baritone provided an hour and a half’s truly entertaining performance.

David launched into his opening number, All I Care about is Love (also the title track of his new album), with great gusto. The audience, carried by his infectious enthusiasm and full-throated vocals, clapped along, clearly appreciating his charismatic performance.

Taking on the style of a variety show, songs were interspersed with a bit of stand-up comedy, with David drawing on his own history and Jewish roots for some hilarious (and some slightly cliché!) moments of comedy, which had a multi-ethnic audience laughing along with him. Joking about his slightly late arrival on stage, David told the audience that it was because he had to take an important call from his agent – he had been asked to perform in Iran, all expenses paid, including flights, hotels, meals and funeral expenses! When he died, he wanted to be buried at Harrods … so he knew his wife would visit him at least twice a week!

Comedy aside, David put on a magnificent performance of some of the great stage classics. We were taken on an entertaining journey of opera, Broadway and jazz numbers by a clearly talented vocalist, covering arias such as Toreador from Carmen and the infamous, traditionally tenor aria, Nessun Dorma, which, despite being a baritone, David delivered with great depth and emotion.

Beautifully sung arias were followed by a bit of Broadway, with Fiddler On The Roof’s If I Were A Rich Manand the perennial favourite Singing In The Rain. Clearly enjoying interacting with his audience, David went up into the seated area, getting people to sing along with him. Any reluctant participants who met with the microphone were passionately encouraged to “Sing!”, much to everyone’s amusement, though it was all done in good humour (and we hadn’t laughed so much in ages as when that microphone was put in front of us!).

After a couple of numbers from Phantom of The Opera, including the duet All I Ask of You with Maki Hsieh, a classical vocalist from L.A. who also opened the show for David, we were treated to a half English, half French performance of a duet that David originally performed with Jermaine Jackson, Autumn Leaves.

Continuing his multilingual theme, David performed a Russian number, following which there was a bit more audience participation for the Grand Finale – five audience members were chosen to go up on stage and perform a simply choreographed dance (a bit of stepping side-to-side and turning around with hand in the air!) to accompany the song Mexico.

We left the theatre in high spirits, having had a really enjoyable evening of fantastic vocal performance with a good measure of comedy to boot. David’s energy, passion and joy in his show, together with his fun-loving charm were highly infectious. Our enjoyment could only have been improved upon, if there had perhaps been a full live orchestra backing him, to fully showcase and support his tremendous vocal talents. Nevertheless,One Man Musical was certainly a hit with us and we hope to see more of David Serero in Manchester soon!

Every once in a while a talent rises that is totally unique and a true joy to experience, such is French Baritone David Serero. Opera singer, Actor, Producer, Baritone, Comedian & Entertainer, David is a true Renaissance man. His latest album, The Broadway Baritone, features songs from some of the greatest musical theatre shows, including Camelot, My Fair Lady, Phantom of The Opera & Fiddler on The Roof and many others. His rich, classical baritone and sultry French accent add a mellifluous flair to all the songs on the album, but this is particularly true with his rendition of Some Enchanted Evening , the Rogers & Hammerstein classic from South Pacific, David makes this song his own and surely the role of Emile de Becque is one he was born to play.

Throughout the album the music is fabulously interpreted by the world famous Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Paul Bateman & James Fitzpatrick. The album is filled with great moments, but if David's Impossible Dream from his signature role of Don Quixotte from Man of La Mancha (Leigh & Darion) doesn't make the hair on the back of your neck stand up, then I'll eat several courses of assorted hats!

David Serero, who made his splendid New York debut at the Snapple Theater on December 19, is a deliciously retro, personality plus musical dynamo, who may single-handedly revive variety … maybe even vaudeville. He instantly won over a multi-ethnic audience — from Russia, Morocco, Israel, Tunisia, France, Italy, even Brooklyn, by speaking and singing in several languages and interspacing his songs with bits of his own history and some of the world’s corniest jokes. “My mother was Israeli. My father was polygamous.” David also spoke about his winning a totally prepaid trip to Iran, which included flights, hotels, meals and funeral expenses. He really gets around. During the current year, he’s performed his one-man show or starred in Man of La Mancha in Paris, Dubai, London, St. Petersburg, Singapore, Capri, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Dijon, Cannes, Bangkok and Tokyo. Wouldn’t you like to have his frequent flyer miles?

David’s more than immensely versatile. He’s adorable, handsome, smiling, happy, winning. He walks on stage in an open collar pink shirt and a beautifully tailored, single-breasted grey suit that fits his wiry body like an expensive hand-made glove. Too bad it hides his abs. I must get the name of his tailor so I can send my husband Alvin, that long-suffering saint, to him. Hopefully he’ll do more with him than his present haberdasher, TJ Maxx, has.

David transformed an unfortunate childhood into the delighted existence he now enjoys through pluck, luck and chutzpah. The son of a very poor French-Jewish family who couldn’t afford to have his ear infection treated properly, David became deaf during infancy and finally regained his hearing when he was 9 years old, thanks to series of surgeries, and taught himself to speak.

David introduces himself, shakes hands with a few people and opens with a full-throated All I Care about is Love from Chicago, backed by full orchestral accompaniment wafting/blaring from two large speakers. I was not the only audience member waiting for him to disrobe. After more patter and a few more jokes, he launched into the operatic portion of the performance with arias and explanatory remarks about Carmen and Turandot before returning to his Jewish roots via If I were a Rich Man, singing better and jiggling far less than Zero’s Tevye did.

David’s Broadway tribute included Stars from Les Miz, and Old Man River from Showboat,which he makes sure you understand are very difficult songs to sing and honors Hollywood with Singing in the Rain.

I found his about face, after he learned there were Russkys in the rear seat, most endearing. He sang several choruses of Katyusha, the nickname for a WWII Russian rocket launcher and the anthem which my pro-Marxist Mom always sang with our Red Army Chorus LP before she cast Lenin and Stalin behind the iron door. He asked the audience to join in if they knew the words, some did, but to his surprise an Israeli stood up and sang the song with David but in Hebrew.

The finale? Ten audience members joined David on stage to do a Mexican song and a dance of David’s devising.

And a great time was had by all.

David Serero will be singing in Singapore on New Year’s Eve, but rumors are floating that he’ll be back in NY in May at 54 Below. Go see him. He’s better than pure perfection. He’s slightly flawed and lots of fun.

French born actor/singer, David Serero, knows how to have a good time. He gave it his all at the Snapple Theater on December 19th, his first New York appearance in 10 years. His sense of humor is refreshingly goofy. His spoken set is essentially stand up comedy. Packed with setups and punches. His songs and his comedy don’t always flow perfectly, but it doesn’t matter. He makes the audience laugh. Serero’s voice is quite powerful. The richness in his voice cuts straight through with an undeniable depth and beauty.

Serero opens the show with “All I Care About is Love” from the hit musical Chicago. The song is also the title of his album “All I Care About is Love,” which features many of the songs performed in this show, including “Autumn Leaves,” “If I were a Rich Man,” and “Old Man River.” All of which are performed with fervor and poise. His rendition of “I Wish You Love,” performed in French was particularly moving. The French singer, Charles Trenet, originally recorded the song. Serero’s interpretation certainly paid homage to the great, late French singer.

Serero’s style is much more presentational than reflective. He graciously and gracefully involves the audience in a way that I have never seen done before. At certain points Serero brings his microphone over to random audience members, encouraging them to sing along with him. During “Singing in the Rain,” Serero spotted me and had me come up and finish the number with him. I really enjoyed myself. He charmed the pants off me and blew me away with his beautiful voice and improv skills. He’s definitely someone who would be fun to work with.
